Een introductieworkshop voor de Moku-Hanga techniek, ook bekend als Ukiyo-e 浮世絵, "prenten van de vlietende wereld" is een vorm van houtsnede uit Japan die vanaf de jaren 1860 ook in Europa populair werd. Er zijn drie stappen in het maakproces van Ukiyo-e: E-shi 絵師 (de kunstenaar), Hori-shi 彫師 (de houtsnijder) en Suri-shi 摺師 (de drukker).

Wij beginnen eerst met een presentatie over de japanse houtsnede, het maakproces, de materialen en de gereedschappen. Je krijgt ook originele historische japanse houtsneden te zien.* Vervolgens gaan wij een demonstratie met behulp van al gesneden platen als Suri-shi 摺師 (de drukker) proberen de houtsneden met mooie japanse klassieke ontwerpen af te drukken. Dat doen we met kleurinkt met Yamato Nori (niet-toxische lijm) op waterbasis, paardenharen borstels en op japans papier met een Baren. Een Baren is een japans traditioneel instrument dat wordt gebruikt in plaats van een drukpers. Dit alles samen is het meest geschikt voor deze soort drukwerk. Daarna zet je jouw ontwerp als E-shi 絵師 (de kunstenaar) op een houten plaat, met gutsen uitsnijden als Hori-shi 彫師 (de houtsnijder). De laatste stap als Suri-shi 摺師 (de drukker), maakt je drukinkten en nadien ga je deze houtsnede afdrukken met een baren op verschillende Japans papieren. Ook kun je leren welke Japanse papiere geschikt zijn voor jouw manier.

* In this workshop, you can get a chance to see the special collections of Dr.Ad Stijnman who is a printmaker and print historian. You can compare the print techniques between etching/engraving, lithography and woodcut prints.

Demo materialen om die stap te leren

Je kunt een van de vier afbeeldingen gebruiken.
Als je jouw ontwerp gebruiken, de afmeting is beter om kleiner dan 10 x 14 cm te maken.

* Voor deze workshop kun je een Shina Plywood plaat (11 cm x 15 cm x 4 mm) en een lindenhout plaat (11 cm x 15 cm x 5 mm) krijgen. Dunne plaat maar toch is het mogelijk om beide zijden te gebruiken.

シナベニア Shina Plywood (Tilia japonica): Multiplex voor houtsnede, oorspronkelijk lindehout uit Japan. Kan ook 樺の木 de berkenhout of 桜の木 kersenhout kiezen. Hoe harder de houtsoort, hoe fijner details mogelijk zijn, maar de goede houtsnijtechniek is ook nodig en de prijs is duurder dan van Shina Plywood.

An introduction workshop for the Moku-Hanga technique, also known as Ukiyo-e 浮世絵, "prints of the floating world" is a form of woodcut from Japan that became popular in Europe from the 1860s. There are three steps in the process of making Ukiyo-e: E-shi 絵師(the artist), Hori-shi 彫師(the woodcarver) and Suri-shi 摺師(the printer).

We first start with a presentation about the Japanese woodcut, the making process, the materials and the tools. You can see some original historical Japanese woodcut prints.

Next we will see the demonstration using ready made plates with beautiful Japanese classic designs as Suri-shi 摺師to try to print the woodcut plates.

We do this with color ink and Yamato Nori (non-toxic glue) on water-base using horsehair brushes and onto Japanese paper with the Baren. A Baren is a Japanese traditional instrument that is used instead of a printing press. All this together is the most suitable for making this kind of print works.
First you make your design as E-shi 絵師and transfer it onto a wooden plate, next with knives you carve as Hori-shi 彫師. The last step as Suri-shi 摺師, you make printing inks and afterwards you print this woodcut with a Baren and on different Japanese papers. You can also learn which Japanese papers are suitable for your way.

Demo materials to study the steps of woodcut

You can use one of four ready-made images.
When you make your own design, the images should be smaller than 10 x 14 cm.

The harder the wood species, the finer details are possible, but the good woodcutting technique is also necessary and the price is more expensive than that of Shina Plywood
