Yuriko Miyoshi Exposeert in Galerie Zône

HINA-MATSURI

Yuriko Miyoshi is a graphic artist (etcher) pur sang. She has a Japanese diploma degree in the visual arts (MA).

Her first travelling abroad was to attend the opening of an exhibition of “Contemporary Japanese prints” in 1985, that also included her own work, in the British Museum in London. Since then ‘her travelling with her print works’ began. She participated in various International Print Projects, such as in Japan, Belgium, Portugal, the Baltic countries and the Netherlands. Yuriko's prints are in private collections and also in public collections such as the British Museum.

She makes very fine work in which several themes come forward: travel, musical instruments, maps, memories. This time her series of travelling with music will be exhibited, seen through Japanese eyes and translated into wonderful colour etchings. Old as well as new works will be shown.

You are very welcome

HINA-MATSURI

Because of the Hina-Matsuri festival on 3 March (the 3rd of March is a Japanese festival day that is important for girls), Yuriko Miyoshi will sell some prints for the special price of 33,= Euro.
And… 13 March is Yuriko's birthday.

It is Hina-matsuri 雛祭り or momo-no-sekku 桃の節句 (dolls or peach festival) because in this season the peach trees are in bloom, but mostly called the 'Girl’s Day’, because the festival is meant to wish girl’s happiness. From about the middle of February a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyô 雛人形) are diplayed at home, representing the traditional inner Palace (dairi 内裏). The placement consists basically of five platforms with at the top the Emperor and the Empress (from the Heian period 794-1185). The second stage has three ladies, then five musicians and then two ministers from a kind of Imperial Guard. And the final place keeps three servants. The fifth place has a tree on both sides, a mandarin orange tree (always left) and a cherry (always right). Usually there are two more layers with miniature objects such as furniture, dining tables, palanquin, boxes for clothes, carriages, etc. For this day there are special treats such as hina-arare 雛霰, hishi-mochi 菱餅 (a diamond-shaped rice cake) and shiro-zake 白酒 (sweet white sake, without alcohol). Hina-arare is puffed rice with bright colors: white (snow), green (leaves and buds) and pink (live). The grains of this rice pops are sweet and soft. It makes sense that the sweets of these three colors are gifted with the natural energy, healthy for growth. Superstition says that leaving the dolls past March 4th will result in a late marriage for the daughter.
