Foundation Veerle Rooms

The new year starts with a selection of Japanese contemporary talent in wine shop / gallery De Heerlykheid. Eight famous print makers exhibit their work from January 13 to February 27 in 2016.
As Artists-in-Residence of the Foundation Veerle Rooms, Yuriko Miyoshi curated this exhibition.

Yuriko stayed in the Foundation's Studio at the Cogels Osylei in Berchem for the whole month of October 2015 and also gave workshops at the Museum Plantin-Moretus at the Vrijdagmarkt.
With a permanent base in the Netherlands, she is familiar with Antwerp and its surroundings already for quite some time. Her work displays the development of Japanese printmaking to date. The premium prints which she designed and printed for the Friends of the Foundation Veerle Rooms are partly inspired by 'Holland' themes with an oriental eye and effect. Flowers and landscapes she arranges into a stylized design that are formed to an abstraction of lines and colours. It is particularly the remarkable use of colour hues that makes her work recognizable.
In her latest prints Yuriko Miyoshi especially works with a background of old city plans, which she gives a new life with her particular colour application. The demonstrations at the Museum Plantin-Moretus gave her the opportunity to make a choice from collections of old and historical Antwerp city maps. An eye-catcher will be the copy of the neighbourhood Zurenberg that she used for the premier print of the Foundation VR.

De Heerlykheid will thereby exhibit her selection of Japanese colleague printmakers. Some of these artists  stayed as guests in the studio of Veerle Rooms, such as Koyuki Kazahaya, who currently lives in Paris, Marie Okada (lives in Tokyo), Akiko Taniguchi (lives in Canada), Mami Higuchi (lives in Portugal), Taisuke Yuki (lives in Tokyo), Haruko Cho (lives in Tokyo) and Hiroaki Miyayama (lives in Chiba), the latter being best known for his conspicuous use of gold leaf. These eight artists have already been active internationally. Thus it is a rare opportunity to get acquainted with their print works immediately in our neighbourhood.
This exhibition means a colourful start of its fourth year of activities for the Foundation Veerle Rooms. The program of the Friends will be touching Japanese culture due to this year’s commemoration of the Belgium-Japan Cultural Agreement 150 years anniversary.

During the Friends’ Day of the Foundation, taking place in De Heerlyckheid on February 7th, 2016, this will definitely get a place.
