A quick material test for a special technique / Project Japanese Woodcut organized by Foundation Veerle Rooms in Antwerp-Berchem, Belgium, August 16-20, 2021: 'Meester Leerling'

Ink test on several papers for woodcut printing on July 2023.

Mixed with calligraphy Sumi ink, water-based paint*, Yamato nori (Tapioca starch paste).
* Blue & Red: Talens Ecola is de betere schoolkwaliteit (gouache o) plakkaatverf en veruit het meest gebruikt op scholen in Nederland. Het is niet giftig, betaalbaar en toch redelijk van dekking en substantie

Test with Japanese Water Colour (Sakura or Pentel) and Aqua Washi (Charbonnel)
Note: What is Aqua Wash?

Charbonnel Aqua Wash range meets all the criteria for artist quality inks. It has a high pigmentation concentration identical to that of standard inks, and can be used in all intaglio printing techniques: such as engraving, dry-point, mezzotint, etching and aquatint, as well as monotype and relief printing techniques such as linocut and wood prints. Aqua Wash inks are genuine oily inks for use in all techniques whether etching or relief printing. They must not be confused with water and resin based inks such as gum Arabic or cellulose-tempera based inks that can be re-softened and are limited to monotype or relief techniques (linocut, wood engraving). https://www.joopstoop.com/en/printing-inks/1930-color-ink-charbonnel-aquawash.html

Maak uw etspapier vochtig.

Plate: Shina Japanese Plywood (4 mm/5.5mm)
It is made with a shina plywood veneer and a lauan wood core. It is the most widely used plywood in Japan for Mokuhanga techniques (Japanese water-based woodblock printing).

Shina 'Tilia Japonica' is a sustainable timber grown in the colder parts of Japan and is renowned for its fine, almost undiscernible grain. It is manufactured into shina plywood that is soft and easy to carve and is favoured by printmakers for its ability to hold detail and sharp edges during the printmaking process. This easy-to-cut plywood also works well with oil-based inks and Western-style woodcut tools. It is worth noting that shina plywood is not guaranteed to be without some internal voids. These can be seen when the ply is held up to a strong light so you can plan your images with this in mind.
